Unit 5 Grammar Will/Won't and First Conditional

 1. Predictions (Jangkaan) are made with WILL( akan) or WON'T (tidak akan) followed by the infinitive without to.

  • Ex. I will be an engineer.
To introduce predictions (jangkaan) you can use: I guess (saya rasa), I think (saya fikir), I expect (saya jangka)
  • Ex. I think they will find a cure for zica virus.
2. Can (boleh) is a defective verb and doesn't have future form, so we use to  BE ABLE TO (boleh) for the future.
  • Ex. He will be able to (akan boleh) swim in two months.
3. Will and won't are often used with time expressions like: soon, soon one day, one day, tomorrownext month (week, year). It is also use with time clauses like: when I am older, when I am ....years old etc...
  • When I am 30, I'll (I will) be a famous singer.
4. There is inversion subject + pronoun in questions:
  • Will they find a cure for zica virus soon?
5. Will /won't are used in short answers:
  • Yes they will/ No, they won't.

1st conditional.

We use the first condional to talk about possible situations (situasi yang mungkin terjadi) and their consequences (akibat)
a) If the situation comes first, we use a comma before the main clause.

If clause (situation)
Main clause (consequence)
If I study harder,
I will pass the exam.
If you don’t study hard,
you won’t pass the exam.

b) But you can start the sentence with the main clause. In this case you don't need a comma.

Main clause (consequence)
If clause (situation)
I will pass the exam.
if I study harder.
You won’t pass the exam.
if you don’t study hard.
